I’m building a Pietenpol. I hear I can varnish all my ribs completely (plan to use Miniwax Helmsman spar varnish, 50% with water first coat). I just want to check that it’s OK to do that, because over at the Hatz Classic group, they say don’t varnish any parts that will come in contract with glue.

So, the question is, can I varnish the entire rib, or do I need to tape off certain parts? Thank you. John

You can do that but may want to lightly scuff the areas you intend to glue the fabric to around the perimeter of the wing.

I take it that using wood sealer – clear satin or sanding, means there is no requirement to use varnish?
